Bombay Cottage

Genevieve Potter and friends discover how the Bombay Cottage has created a new formula for success.

The Bombay Cottage is one of Stamford’s best known curry houses, situated on Scotgate, Stamford.  Established in 1994, it is run by Habib and his team of eight staff.  Behind its small frontage is a deceptively spacious and very welcoming restaurant, which was refurbished early this year.
It’s fair to say that in recent times the Bombay Cottage has been overshadowed by a new breed of Indian restaurants that have sprung up around Stamford, however, with the restaurant looking bang up to date, and a new menu that is better than ever, it is fair to say that the Bombay is back!
The menu is comprehensive without being confusing, and there is a whole section of “Special Presentation” options, which are the signature dishes, including many new arrivals.
As we were eating late on a Friday evening and were all ravenous, we opted to dive straight into the main courses, having first demolished a large basket of papadoms, which were served with the usual sauces, pickles, and chopped salad – all deliciously fresh.

We decided to share four mains, which included the new Raj-Shahi Amar Jhinga – a dish of Goan origin comprising king prawns cooked in a medium to mild sauce with mango pulp, natural yoghurt, and a dash of fresh cream. The prawns were cooked perfectly and the sauce was absolutely delicious.  We also sampled the new Rangamati chicken, which comprised thinly sliced breast of chicken cooked with Bangladeshi spices, cumin seeds, ginger, garlic, fried onion and peppers; it was definitely on the hot side but extremely tasty.  Another dish which went down really well was the classic Chicken Saslik, a healthier option of baked chicken pieces roasted in tandoori spices and served with salad and mint yoghurt.  With sides of sag (spinach) bhajee, and mushroom pilau rice there was certainly plenty to go round.

All we could manage for dessert were some wonderfully refreshing lemon and orange sorbets, which were the perfect contrast to our main meal. The bill came to an extremely reasonable £80 for four, which included two rounds of drinks.
All in all, fantastic food, great company, and knowledgable, attentive service, which is what has always set The Bombay Cottage apart from the competition, and will continue to do so.
