Nick’s is tucked away in the corner of Oakham marketplace, next to the coveted free parking, which comes in very handy when it’s not Oakham Festival. It’s been plagued by rumours of shutting down/reopening and it’s one of those places we’ve been talking about for ages but not got round to actually eating there...

Having grown up somewhat and managed to find a babysitter for the evening we ate at Nick’s last week, after failing to get a last minute table at Hambleton Hall (surprise surprise!). It was a celebration meal, so M and I dressed up and didn’t feel too ridiculous alongside the chinos and checked shirt brigade inside.

I ordered asparagus with Serrano ham, hollandaise and a crispy duck egg, and M went for the chicken Caesar salad starter size. The crispiness of the duck egg was a bit odd (almost a scotch egg coating) but otherwise the starter was delicious. M really enjoyed  the Caesar salad – not as garlicky as my homemade version which is apparently a bonus.

We both had the beef with bone marrow, which was around £18 each, as a main and loved it – the quality of the meat was excellent. A couple of sore spots were that my rare was more of a medium, and neither of us were too keen on the bone marrow which came in the same crispy coating as the duck egg, but we absolutely loved the broad beans which couldn’t have been fresher if they’d come straight out of the garden.

I have to say that the star of the show was the service, which was absolutely amazing – what really lovely people they are. Wine was fantastic and the ambience and interior were cosy, relaxing and stylish – love the lounge and the art menu, and it felt like a really special evening mostly due to the exquisite hosting by Simon, the owner.

We didn’t have desserts but whilst people-watching saw a great looking cheese board glide past, with mouthfuls of several tasty looking cheeses, and some very interesting icecreams. It was a beautiful balmy evening so we got sidetracked by the lovely evening sunshine and disappeared into Oakham for a very happy wander. We paid around £90 for 2 including wine, which did seem a bit steep but we went for the expensive beef and the wine was around £30. We’re already planning to take advantage of the lunch for less offer at Nick’s on a weekday as there was a very attractive looking menu – plus the added satisfaction of easier access to the lovely free parking.

Nick’s factfile:
In a nutshell: fine dining in a relaxed and welcoming gentleman’s club environment in the heart of Oakham, service second to none.

Typical price for two: Including wine around £90
